Whether you’re starting University this September, or heading back there, we thought it was the perfect time to give you our top tips to help you maintain a tidy and organised flat/home/halls for the whole year round. Your university flat (specially your room) is a place where you want to be able to relax and chill in between lectures and workload and therefore you want it to be an organised and calming space.
Keeping your space tidy can be so easy if you just take these 5 easy steps to ensure you’re staying organised all semester long.
- Have a huge deep clean when you first move in
This will make life 10x easier for the rest of the year and will ensure you start off the year with a fresh clean slate. Make sure you de-clutter any items you do not need, and only bring items that are essential to create more space. Start with the bigger rooms (living room and kitchen), and really begin to organise all your items, and have a deep-clean scrub. Mop the floor, hoover, polish and wash anything you need to. By starting off the year squeaky clean, every other time you clean should feel easier.
- Make a schedule
Make sure you make a schedule with your flat mates to make the cleaning easier. Make sure to take turns with the cleaning and each do your own rooms when needed. Make clear rules to clean up after yourselves but set people weekly tasks to ensure there is no build up of rubbish or clutter. Having a bin timetable, kitchen rules and monthly clear out of the whole flat can ensure your flat is looking tidy at all times.
- Clean little and often
Cleaning can feel daunting, and as a student you may feel like you have no time to clean as you’re so busy. Each flat mate cleaning little and often means that you can quickly clean up after yourselves, and clean once a week for 15/20 minutes and the flat will still look spotless. Cleaning doesn’t have to take hours if you never let the flat get dirty. You will avoid cleaning less when you know it wont take long, so make it a weekly priority even if its just for 15/20 minutes.
- Buy some budget-friendly shelving
Shelving is the perfect storage solution for your university flat, and it’s key you can find some budget-friendly shelving (as student life is expensive). Shelving can create vertical space in your flat and is the perfect item to store away any items. You may want to use it for your study space to store all of your books and work, or even to store away items in your wardrobes or cupboards.
Here at Rhino we offer the perfect shelving for students, as it is budget-friendly, boltless and easy to assemble, as well as holding 200kg per shelf (meaning even your heaviest items can be stored away safely). Why not check out our new wire shelving range? Our wire shelving range is sleek and stylish, so looks amazing in your home, as well as sturdy and able to hold all of your items safely.
- Purchase some great cleaning supplies.
Finally, you want to ensure you have some good cleaning supplies to help you with your cleaning. Having nice smelling, and good quality cleaning products can make your cleaning so much easier. You can purchase budget-friendly supplies from shops such as Wilko’s and Savers, and each flat mate can split the costs of the items to make it much cheaper for you all. Make sure to purchase things such as surface wiper, polish, brushes, washing up liquid and cleaning sprays. These cleaning supplies should set you up to be clean for the whole semester!
Being organised really can be that simple!
