Garage Shelving Guide | Benefits, Type, & Assembly

Find out about garage storage shelves and how they can help reclaim your home from clutter.

Garage shelving is central to storage in many of our homes. It's a quick way to tidy up clutter and add extra storage space in your house, garage, and shed. But not all shelving is the same; there are several different types of shelves, all offering benefits to meet different storage needs. Read on to see how to garage shelving can help keep your space organised.

In this article, you'll find:

What are garage shelving units?

Garage shelving racks are 5-Tier units that offer storage space for your household goods - it's that simple. Each shelf provides a load weight (our range provides 200kg per tier) which acts as a guideline for what you can place on the shelves.

These handy home storage units usually have modular designs, meaning you can adjust them to suit your storage needs. Let's say you're storing boxes of varying heights, with some boxes taller than others; you can make the above shelf higher to fit the bigger ones. Easy, right?

They can be arranged in a few different ways, starting with a freestanding set-up; this means the units can stand alone, and you can place them wherever you like, with the option to rearrange them in the future. They can also be attached to the wall using bolts if you're looking for extra stability for some bulkier items.

They're perfect for use in your home, garage, or shed. If you own a business, they're ideal for organising shop displays, stockrooms, and warehouses.

Do I need garage shelves?

If you're struggling for space in your home, or have a garage that's become a makeshift tip that you enter at your own risk, then you will benefit from some storage shelves. And, you're not alone. Let's look at some stats:

What types of garage racking are available?

Slimline Shelving

Slimline shelves are one of the most popular options available, and it's easy to see why. These units are more compact than standard shelving and can fit into tighter spaces without compromising loading capacity. They're perfect for when you don't have much space, with a height of 150cm, a width of 75cm, and a depth of 30cm that lets them slot into places like cupboards.

Extra Deep Shelving

Extra-deep shelving offers you more space to store your more oversized, heavier items. The 60cm depth gives you more than standard racking and helps you get on top of organising any larger areas, such as store rooms, cellars, workshops, or workplaces.

Longspan Racking

Wide shelving units are perfect if you're a bit of a hoarder or have a larger space to tidy up. They are the ideal storage solution for when you need to store bulky stuff or if you're organising a garage. With a shelf width of 120cm and twin support beams under the shelves, these units give you the extra support you need.

Heavy-Duty Shelving

These high-quality and durable shelving units hold a massive 200kg per tier (1000kg per unit), making them perfect for storing heavy loads in the garage, workshops and stockrooms. Industrial shelves are also perfect for business storage in storerooms or shop floors.

How do I declutter with garage shelving

Here's where you come in.

Organising a space with shelving always starts with a good clear-out. Sort through what you want to keep and the things you need to throw away (we're looking at you, Foreman grill that never came out of the box).

If you're looking for a little help moving things around, consider our lightweight sack truck, or heavy duty twin handle sack truck, to make everything a little easier.

Next, you need to pick some shelving. Slimline shelving is a great option when you don't have much to put away. If you're a hoarder with more to store, some widespan or extra-deep racking will do the job nicely.

Now, you need to work out where everything's going and make a plan. It's best to put things in categories for ease; for example, you might want to dedicate a shelf (or a whole unit) to things like food, camping equipment, tools, etc.

Finally, you can build your units and adjust them to suit your stuff. Now, you can enjoy the benefits of shelving storage, which we'll take you through next.

What are the benefits of garage shelving?

Now, the exciting bit; is how will they help improve your home. We've already covered a few benefits above, so let's see what else they can do for you.

  • They free up floor space: Shelving doesn't just store away your goods; it also gives you extra room in your home. With less junk littering the floor of your bedroom, garage, or shed, you can move more freely or put the extra space to better use.
  • They reduce housework: Yes, you read that right. Studies have shown that tidying up your home with nifty storage solutions can reduce housework by up to 40%.
  • They're an affordable storage solution: Shelving is a storage option you can use that won't break the bank, especially when you shop with us. Our shelving starts from as little as £36.99, which is less than most takeaways these days.
  • They're multipurpose: Thanks to our modular design, you can split your shelving unit in two, leaving you with a 3-Tier shelving unit and a 2-Tier workbench.
  •  They help you save time: Efficiently storing your goods means you know where everything is, which stops you from racing around like a headless chicken to find things when you're in a hurry.

How do you build shelving units?

We've all let the red mist descend when dealing with a mountain of nuts and screws at one time or another, and there's nothing more frustrating than sitting with a 30-page instruction manual to build something that should take five minutes. Luckily, you'll get none of that with Rhino Racking.

We've engineered our units with an easy-build, boltless design that lets you set them up in no time. All you need to do is bend the convenient tabs on each beam into the slots provided and tap them into place using a rubber mallet. Once you have built a tier, place the MDF board neatly on top, and you're all set.

Don't believe it's THAT easy to assemble? Check out our assembly video below.

Can I get spare shelves for my Rhino Racking units?

Yes, this is entirely possible. Check out our full range of spare additional shelves that work with any of our shelving units.
